Now almost a $14 billion dollar industry, up from $6 billion since the year 2000, more and more people are aware of the benefits of going organic. However, there is a lot of debate as to whether organic foods are worth the higher price. Organic basically means no pesticides, no fertilizers, no radiation, no antibiotics, and no dyes ... stuff not good for our body. But, when you are on a budget and want to concentrate on safe eating habits at the same time, you may wonder which organic products you should buy. Basically, you should focus on the products you consume most. In our house it is meat, milk, and eggs. Organic meat, milk, and eggs won't contain hormones and antibiotics. (Plus, I like to support companies that have cage-free chickens.) Strawberries, peaches, and grapes are high in pesticides so consider going organic on these items as well. If you have to forego some organic products because of the cost, consider vegetables with thick skin. The thick skin will help keep pesticides from seeping into the food and lots of it can be washed away. Also forego potato chips. Potato chips do contain preservatives, but this is a food you should not be consuming a lot of anyway as it is fattening. Remember, organic does not mean healthier and eating organic foods will not make you thinner. It basically means safer.
