Did you know that levels of indoor air pollution can be up to five times higher than outside levels?
You can breathe easier though just by adding a few inexpensive houseplants to your home. Some plants thrive on common chemicals from the air, such as formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide, and therefore help remove these chemicals from the air in your home. Luckily, some of the best plants for cleaning air are easy to grow. The top air-purifying plants are:
- peace lilies
- bamboo
- palms
- English ivy
- mums
- gerbera daisies
- philodendrons
- spider plants
The larger the plant, the more air it will filter. But as a general rule, you should have one plant for every 100 square feet of living area. If you have smokers in the house though, houseplants are probably not going to help much.
